GDT 2026 Day 16 Little Shovel to Signal

There were periods of rain and high winds all night but the rain ended before I got up and the winds helped to dry the tent quite a bit. If I complained about heat and lack of a breeze previously, today it was quite cold and windy. I was wearing my rain coat and gloves to stay warm for a lot of the day. The trail joined the popular Skyline trail at the end of yesterday and today was a beautiful trail over an exposed ridge for a large part of the day.

Eventually I started to head down into a valley. On my way, I saw some ptarmigan and in the valley itself a grizzly mom and calf. The grizzly was too far off to get a good pic and besides, I didn’t want to agitate Mom so I kept going only glancing over at them occasionally.

Can you spot the bears?

Then it was a long traverse around a mountain with views of the Athabasca River into camp.
