GDT 2026 Day 14 Jonas Cutoff to Mary Vaux

The tent was soaked again this morning from condensation and the tent pads were dirt, so it was pretty gross putting it away. I thankfully didn’t have any company at the privy.

The hiking this morning was quite easy along well groomed flattish trails through the forest with some occasional views.

Then there was a climb up to Maligne Pass on an unmaintained trail. But I think the GDT association has put in a couple of bridges because they looked pretty new. It’s too bad that you get your feet wet crossing many other streams anyways, but perhaps when water is high, those are the two hardest crossings, making it safer.

The pass was similar to yesterday, a long meander through an open valley in the blazing sun with little shade. Gorgeous but exhausting. At least there wasn’t a steep climb at the end of it like there was yesterday.

The descent was gentle too with some views of the mountains towering over the Maligne valley. Including one called Mary Vaux, my campsite’s namesake. I’ll have to look up who she is since it’s not often Mountains are named after females.

One of those is Mary Vaux

I will definitely be the only one here tonight since it’s one party per campsite in this valley and I’m a party of 1. First night camping alone on the trail, hard to believe.
