SIA Day 24: Abri Ruisseau-Fletan to Madeleine Centre (27km, +2188m, -1966m)

This morning started with a short walk into Gros Morne, which didn’t seem to have much going on although there is a restaurant (closed when I went by).

The trail turned inland again and followed a dirt road all the way to Manche d’Épee. The trail then followed the 132 for a few kms in and out of town and I occupied myself by watching more gannets fishing as I walked the highway. Manche d’Épee was also very quiet. After town, the trail turned up an atv track and headed up steeply. I eventually came to a viewpoint over Manche d’Épee and the surrounding hills and Gulf.

There was a platform where I stopped to eat lunch, even though the platform was a bit rickety and not overly comfortable. The trail took a hiking trail shortly after this viewpoint and meandered through the forest to a spot where the SIA was building a new campsite. There was already a platform and the abri was in progress and is going to have windows, which is a definite improvement on their already quite nicely built abris. The trail turned onto an atv trail again, which it followed back down to the coast and along into Madeleine Centre. I was booked into a private campsite and had a difficult time finding the check-in, which turned out to be in this bar called ‘Le Shack à Slush’ near the highway. The campsite was on a hill heading down to a pebble beach and had different types of sites on different levels of the hill. It wasn’t that large of a site and where I was camping, I was with a few small RVs on the middle level. The view was nice and the toilets had free shampoo, but there was zero privacy between campsites.

View from the campsite and of the storm rolling in

I set up my tent and finished just as a storm started to roll in. I grabbed my stuff and headed to the toilet block to shower and wash out my clothes while it was storming. My plan worked pretty well since the heavy rain had stopped when I was done. I couldn’t hang up my clothes to dry though since it was still raining lightly, so I tried laying them out in my tent to dry. I chilled for a bit and eventually went back up the hill to the ‘Shack à Guedille’ and got a shrimp and crab guedille, which was the best one yet.

I had to eat huddled under my umbrella though since it was raining and their picnic tables had no umbrellas or shelter. Although it was raining where I was, it wasn’t out over the Gulf and a lovely sunset developed with the sun peaking through the clouds.
