SIA Day 22: Refuge Les Cabourons to Camping Municipal Mt-St-Pierre, 19km, +599m, -1140m)

I slept much better than the previous night and was up at about 7am. As I was packing up, I realised that I was missing my rock/rope bag for my bear hang and figured I had left where I had hung my food. I went to look for it and as I got back, I was surprised to see a woman sitting at the picnic table outside the refuge. It turned out that she’s running the trail! She only had a tiny day pack for trail running and was doing the endeavor supported and with a friend, who had decided to take the day off today. She was off again in a moment. I was pretty slow today, my feet and Achilles were sore and even one of my quads. I stopped for lunch about 10km in, just by side of the forestry road. About 2km later, I came to a covered picnic table with a view to the bay of Mt-St-Pierre, which would have been an ideal spot, but which wasn’t indicated on any of my maps. I stopped again anyways since it was a lovely spot and even profited from the roof as a shower passed over.

View from the pic nic area, that’s the Gulf in the dip!

It was very steep going down into valley of the Mt-St-Pierre river, but it was a relatively fast walk into the campground, which was along the river, a few kms from the coast.

I checked-in and set up tent before taking a shower and doing some laundry. There was a woman in the toilet block when I got out of the shower who recognised me from Lac Cascapedia, she was one of the people by the side of the lake that I had spoken to. I wasn’t sure if I had enough snacks, so I went back to the acceuil to find a granola bar or something. They didn’t have any, only chocolate bars, but a previous hiker had left some extra things for other hikers to take for free. I very gratefully chose a Cliff bar and a Ziploc of trail mix from the selection. As I was getting ready to go to bed, a campground employee was driving around all the sites and warning us that a severe storm watch had been issued. She said that the main buildings would be open all night if we needed shelter. I didn’t feel very reassured by this news and did my best to secure my tent as much as possible and texted with Gill a bit for reassurance. It did start thundering a little later, but it didn’t get too close to us and the wind and rain weren’t bad at all.
